Coming out of the shadow

It’s a joy to watch my youngest stepping out of his big brother’s shadow.

Not that Sean ever complained.  He’s always been eager to try whatever Big Brother had tried, tagalong with his activities, and admire his friends.  In the past few weeks, though, he hit 3 milestones one after another, and is walking around the house with a little more confidence, talking to the Big Brother more like a peer than an idol.

Sean won his spelling bee, won Best of Show at the 4-H project show, and then won a lead role in a community theatre production.  He’ll be singing his first solo on stage while memorizing ninja spelling words for his shot at nationals.  His good mood is affecting everything he does.  This morning he walked through the kitchen, saw me preparing a meal, and offered to chop the mushrooms for me.  He doesn’t even like mushrooms!  But he cheerfully chopped them, dumped them into the soup, hugged me, and moved back to his schoolwork.

Success looks good on him.  We’ll have to watch to see where it takes him.
